Keep Windows and Mac up to date (and why it matters)

How to install Windows and macOS updates, set automatic updates, and keep browsers and apps current to stay secure.

Quick fix

Turn on automatic updates, restart when asked, and check for updates once a month. Updates fix security holes that attackers actively use.

Windows
Open Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Set active hours so restarts happen outside your work time.
Mac
Open System Settings > General > Software Update and turn on automatic updates.
Restart when asked
Many updates only finish after a restart. Save your work and restart at the end of the day.
Update browsers and apps
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari update themselves but may need a restart. Update apps from the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store or each app’s own updater.
Retire unsupported systems
Computers that no longer receive security updates should be upgraded or replaced, especially if they handle customer or payment information.
