Is the internet down? How to check for an outage

How to tell whether the internet problem is your equipment or a provider outage, and what to do for your business while you wait.

Updated

Quick fix

Check the modem’s lights, see whether every device is offline, then use your phone’s cellular data to check your provider’s outage page or app. If it’s an outage, report it and switch to a backup connection or forward your business calls.

Step by step

  1. Is it every device?

If one computer is offline but others work, it’s that device. If everything is down, it’s the connection or the equipment.

  2. Look at the modem

Most modems show a light for the internet or “online” status. A red, blinking or missing light usually means no connection from the provider.

  3. Restart the equipment

Restart the modem and router once.

  4. Check your provider

On your cell phone (with Wi-Fi off), open your internet provider’s app or outage page, or call their support line.

  5. Keep the business running

Use a phone hotspot for a computer or two, forward business calls to cell phones or use your phone provider’s mobile app, and post a note for customers if needed.

  6. Plan for next time

An internet backup (a second line or wireless backup) can take over automatically during outages.
