Quick fix
Unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, plug the modem back in first and wait for it to come fully online, then plug in the router. Don’t press the small reset button; that erases your settings.
The modem connects to your internet provider; the router creates your network and Wi-Fi. Many providers combine both in one box (a “gateway”).
Step by step
Warn anyone on calls
Restarting drops the internet and VoIP phones for a few minutes. Do it after hours at the office if you can.
Unplug the power
Unplug the power cord from the modem and from the router (or the single gateway box). Use the power cord, not the reset button.
Wait 30 seconds
This lets the equipment fully power down.
Plug in the modem first
Plug the modem back in and wait until its lights show it’s online (often 2–5 minutes). Check the label or the provider’s guide for what “online” looks like.
Then plug in the router
Plug the router back in and wait another couple of minutes for Wi-Fi to come up.
Test
Open a few websites and run a speed test. Restart VoIP phones if they don’t reconnect on their own.
Common questions
Should I press the reset button?
No, not to fix a slow connection. The reset button restores factory settings and erases your Wi-Fi name, password and any custom settings. A restart (power cycle) is what you want.
How often should I restart my router?
Only when you have a problem, or on a schedule if your IT team recommends it. Frequent problems are a sign the equipment or the connection needs attention.
