Quick fix
Run a speed test on Wi-Fi and again with a cable plugged in. If wired is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, it’s a Wi-Fi coverage problem. If both are slow, restart the modem and router and check for an outage or a plan that’s too small.
Step by step
Run a speed test
Use our free speed test and compare the result to the speed you pay for.
Test with a cable
Plug a computer directly into the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. This tells you whether the internet connection or the Wi-Fi is the problem.
Restart the modem and router
Look for bandwidth hogs
Cloud backups, large uploads, streaming and game downloads can use most of your connection. Pause them and test again.
Move closer or fix coverage
If Wi-Fi is slow only in some rooms, see Wi-Fi dead zones.
Check for an outage
Your provider’s outage page or app will show known problems. See how to check for an outage.
Compare to your needs
If everything works but is still too slow for the number of people and devices, it may be time for a faster plan or a business-grade connection.
