Quick fix
Cover entrances, registers and parking first, mount cameras at a height that sees faces, fix glare and night-vision reflections, and make sure recordings are kept long enough. Change default passwords and keep the recorder updated.
Step by step
Cover the key spots
Entrances and exits, cash registers, stockrooms, parking and loading areas.
Get faces, not hats
Mount cameras high enough to be out of reach but angled to capture faces, not just the tops of heads.
Watch the light
Avoid pointing cameras into bright windows or the sun. At night, keep infrared cameras away from glass and nearby walls that reflect the IR light.
Check recording and retention
Make sure the recorder has enough storage to keep footage for as long as you need, and check it’s actually recording.
Secure the system
Change default passwords, keep firmware updated, and use the manufacturer’s secure remote-viewing app rather than opening ports on your router.
Know the rules
Post signs where required and check local laws, especially for audio recording and privacy in employee areas.
